Life in Art: Michael Gadlin

Marc Piscotty

Early years:

I grew up in Park Hill. I studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League of Denver and while at East High, I got accepted into the prestigious Pratt Institute in New York.

Time in Denver:

I came back home in 1994. I wanted to make a mark here in Denver and survive in this adventurous and very risky art business.

Media:

A variety of polymers, acrylic, black ink, charcoal, china marker, and house paint. My surfaces are often built up with a variety of collage elements that I hand cut and place onto wood panels (my surface of choice). I’m also launching a series of one-of-a-kind painted designer jeans.

Inspirations:

My work is very much driven by emotions and a desire to realize and capture my appreciation for my romantic milieu. I’m often drawn to flavors that are Mediterranean, European, and even Western. Pushing the boundaries of the contemporary art form, I’m very much drawn to epitomize, in my work, the avant-garde.

Career highlights:

In 1999, I was the youngest artist (so far) to win the Cherry Creek Arts Festival’s Best of Show. The Vance Kirkland Museum acquired a work of mine as part of its permanent collection. I’m also very proud to have a piece as part of the city’s public art collection; 18 panels that make up one composition hang permanently in Denver’s District 2 police station.
