The Global Stage
While we applaud the Olympic organizing committee for livening up those staid medal ceremonies with some top bands and performers (Nelly Furtado, Theory of a Deadman), we’re especially happy to see that for the Whistler ceremonies — skiing and snowboarding — the bookers branched out from Canadian acts … not that we aren’t really looking forward to Loverboy. Colorado will be well represented with One Republic on the 21st and The Fray on the 23rd. vancouver2010.com
Buy the Book, Take the Ride
Aspen-area resident George Stranahan is a mix of prominent citizen and philosopher king. His latest work is the coffee table book Phlogs: Journey to the Heart of the Human Predicament (People’s Press), a striking array of photos and short essays written with Nicole Beinstein Strait. A lonely white shirt hangs in the window as the authors write, “The shirt caught good light on that dance floor and Scotty threw back his head in joy.” Or two stone rats guard a container of holy water. It’s all part of the journey. peoplespress.org
Man’s Best Friends
Dogs and beer go together, well, like dogs and everything else. This fun, photo-filled volume pays tribute to the pets that are owned and loved by the people behind Colorado’s craft brewers. More than half the pooches featured are rescue dogs, and publishers Woof Media are partnering with local nonprofits to give a portion of the proceeds to worthy causes, doggie-driven or otherwise. $30, brewdogsbook.com
One for the Road
We’re not talking about a cold one but a hot flick. That’s the premise of a group of locals who will travel to Mexico in March for the Guadalajara International Film Festival, digging for cinematic gems to bring back to Denver. Group members come from the Mexican Consulate and Denver Film Society and include CU Denver assistant film and theatre professor Jose Mercado. “It’s an ongoing collaboration between the two,” Mercado says. “We show some of the films here that premier in Guadalajara and vice versa. It’s also a great outreach to the Latino community here.” The group previously helped get the well-received Mexican film One for the Road, which premiered in Guadalajara, into the Denver Film Festival this past November, Mercado says. Increased ties between Denver and Guadalajara, Mercado adds, could eventually include other cultural exchanges such as plays and writers (Guadalajara also has a book fair). We’ll be watching.
Abracadabra!
Devotees of Philip Stein watches love how they make use of “Natural Frequency Technology” to keep their wearers in harmony with the Earth’s chief resonant frequencies for better focus and relaxation (we love that you can be one with the Earth and still wear diamonds on your wrist). Late last year, the company introduced a line of wine wands, glass tubes with encapsulated crystals that accelerate the aeration of a bottle or glass of red wine ($525). You will never again have to wait hours for that ’62 Château Margaux to breathe on its own. And they come in travel sizes ($325); don’t leave home without one. At Saks Fifth Avenue, philipstein.com
Power Players in the Making
It’s never too early to learn the joy and heartbreak that can come from playing the stock market. Three times per school year, the Colorado Council for Economic Education offers fourth- through twelfth-graders the chance to play the Colorado Stock Market Game, a classroom simulation that teaches kids about research, financial planning, and how current events shape the economy as they manage their portfolios and $100,000 in virtual cash. The late spring game runs March 15 through May 21. Ask your teachers to get involved. ccee.net
The Gift
Rebecca Rosen is pretty much a typical suburban Denver mom; she just happens to be able to communicate with the lingering spirits of lost loved ones. While her waiting list for a reading tops two years, with the arrival this month of her new book, Spirited: Connect to the Guides All Around You, she offers tips for developing your own intuition and connecting with spirit energy in the comfort of your own home. Catch her signing books at the Tattered Cover in Denver February 8 and at Barnes & Noble in Littleton February 22. She’ll also be speaking at the Denver Marriott Tech Center on the 24th — we promise no flowing robes or crystal balls. spirited.rebeccarosen.com
