Best of the Web

One of the best – and most hilarious – blogs to emerge in the past few months is Stuff White People Like. (http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com) This painfully accurate spoof takes a cultural anthropologist’s view of yuppie, urban, white culture. Dinner parties, NPR, raising multilingual kids. All in there. (“The No. 1 reason why white people like not having a TV is so that they can tell you that they don’t have a TV.”)

Naturally, the backlash against SWPL has been quick and biting, charging that the author, Christian Lander, was being racist against white people. Likewise, at all of four months old, SWPL is geriatric by web-coolness standards. Despite accusations that the blog long ago “jumped the shark,” it has nevertheless spawned several spin-offs of recent vintage, including: White Stuff People Like (http://whitestuffpeoplelike.wordpress.com/) and Stuff Nobody Likes (http://www.stuffnobodylikes.com/).

Due to the popularity of the SWPL – it has received over 23,000,000 hits since it launched in January – the author has received a six-figure book deal by Random House. With quality writing and wit like Lander’s, it’s easy to see why.

Personally, Denverism would like to see the blog, Stuff Denverites Like. It would no doubt include wearing Crocs to restaurants and being shown pictures of someone’s dogs when you ask if they have any kids.
