Dems’ Condescending Rhetoric
Submitted by Scott Bergstrom on 04/14/2008 10:18:08 AM
Oh, Barack, what have you done? After months of skillfully making the American electorate feel all warmish and weirdly giddy inside with his silver-tongued rhetoric, the junior Senator from Illinois finally caught a bad case of verbal diarrhea. When asked at a fundraiser in notoriously lefty San Francisco why he wasn’t connecting with Pennsylvania voters – a state with an upcoming primary critical to the Democratic race – Obama replied: “It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who are not like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” Well, duh. Probably everyone in the room thought the same thing. But then, Obama’s the one running for prez and the comment smacks of the sort of condescending-urban-liberal-patrician-speak that make a candidate seem like, well, a condescending urban liberal patrician. The Clinton campaign was quick to make political hay, with Hillary trying to show off her blue-collar bona fides but generally making an ass of herself. She fawned all over working-class Dems, blathering on about her deep appreciation for guns and Jesus. When asked for details on the last time she actually fired a gun or, for that matter, went to church, Clinton replied brusquely, “[That] is not a relevant question in this debate,” and, “We can answer that some other time.” Later, while campaigning in Indiana, Clinton wandered into a working class bar for a beer and painfully awkward small talk with strangers. Cuz, you know, she and Bill may have earned over $100 million in the last seven years, but hey, deep down inside, she’s really just simple folk with the same concerns as you, Joe Six-Pack! No doubt about it, the tragi-comic race for the Democratic nomination is turning out to be the bestest one yet. |

WORKING CLASS BAR
Was there any sniper fire outside that bar that Hillary went into?
