Immigrants Are “Illiterate Peasants,” Says Semi-Literate Jerk

State Representative Douglas Bruce is no stranger to making an ass of himself. Not satisfied with being officially censured for kicking an AP photographer in January, Bruce tried to top himself yesterday in a debate on House Bill 1325. The bill, which would expedite Colorado’s program for temporary seasonal workers, affects thousands of Colorado’s immigrant farm workers who typically come from Mexico and other Latin American countries. In prepared marks before the entire chamber, Bruce said, “We don’t need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in the state of Colorado.”

The collective oh-no-he-dih-unt from the rest of the House chamber came swiftly. Within seconds, Bruce was chastised by colleagues on both sides of the aisle and barred from speaking on HB 1325 again.

Bruce, for his part, doesn’t seem to understand that these so-called “illiterate peasants” are, in fact, some of the hardest working individuals on the planet, making it possible for this jerk-mouth to buy a bag of groceries for under $100. But then, bigotry such as this is always based on ignorance so we shouldn’t really be surprised.

Fortunately, the House isn’t shrugging this off. Senior Representatives are already calling for another official censure and possible expulsion from the government.
