Best of the Web: Tom Waits’ Press Conference

Before there was irony, before there were hipsters, before there was indie music, there was Tom Waits. The strange accordion music that sounds like it’s being played in another room. The lyrics that roam freely between the hilarious, the obscene, and the sweetly sentimental. And, of course, the voice – the voice that sounds, in the words of one critic, “like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car.”

Now Waits is embarking on his Glitter and Doom tour, which, sadly, doesn’t include any stops in Colorado. Like most artists, Waits announced the tour with a press conference – a press conference as unique as Waits himself and strange enough to garner it nearly a quarter-million views since its May 5th appearance on YouTube.
