Celebrating Israels 60th

The state of Israel turns 60 tomorrow, and celebrations are underway the world over – including here in Denver. At the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center at 350 S. Dahlia Street, the public is invited to take part in celebrating this important anniversary from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The JCC will be sponsoring hosting live Israeli music, camel rides, cultural activities, and a performance of Sheketak, Israel’s answer to the Stomp.

Few people realize the deep connection between Denver and one of Israel’s greatest leaders, Golda Meir. Born in Kiev, Meir came to America as a young woman and settled in Wisconsin. Later, she came to Denver and took up residence with her sister, Shayna Korngold. It was here that Meir discovered and became a passionate believer in Zionism, the movement to reestablish a Jewish homeland. Meir famously stated in her 1975 autobiography: “It was in Denver that my real education began.”
