The Boys Are Back in Town!
By Dahlia Jean Weinstein, Denver Magazine® Editor-in-Chief

Last week, NHL stars and former Colorado Avalanche teammates, Peter Forsberg, 34 and Adam Foote, 36, joined former Florida Panther, Ruslan Salei, 33, on the team roster giving this hockey club a much-needed shot of adrenaline as it aims for the playoffs.

The "veterans" add even more exceptional talent to the team full of impressive "youngsters," featured in "Generation Y:
Avalanche's New Blood," in the current issue of Denver Magazine®. The heightened energy of hockey fans surrounding these veteran acquisitions is palpable. I had the pleasure of attending the Colorado Avalanche's Annual Charity Brunch on Sunday, where I was able to chat briefly with a few of the 'boys.'

"How does it feel to be back as an 'older' member of the team?" I asked Forsberg and Foote. "It's great to be back and see 'Footie' and Sakic and all of the other guys. There are a couple of new faces here in the organization – and players, too – but it's just great to be back in the city," said Forsberg. "Well (pause), I look young," joked Foote. "It's great," he added. "You get to know the new guys pretty quick and there are enough guys in the room that I knew before. I played with Smyth and Hannan on the Canadian team."

Foote was coming off a natural high after enjoying a video tribute and the fans' adoration as he hit the Pepsi Center ice with the team the night before the charity brunch. Forsberg was still unsure about whether or not he'd be back on the ice by Tuesday's game against Vancouver.

"I just want to make sure I'm fine and not too far behind when I get on the ice," said Forsberg. "Too far behind the young ones?" I asked. "Exactly," he said laughing. "They're in the middle of the season and I just started. I hope they will give me a couple of practices to get back in tempo." Forsberg – and his fans - had nothing to worry about. His tempo was just fine. Nearly a year off the ice – and four years away from the Avalanche bench - any jitters he might have had disappeared as Forsberg joined Sakic and Hejduk on an impressive line that generated numerous scoring chances.

Forsberg had fans on the edge of their seats – then out of their seats for a standing ovation - as he enjoyed nearly 20 minutes of impressive ice time during the Avs 2-1 win over Vancouver. Dare I say, watching the team grind on Tuesday night reminded me of the games leading up to the Avalanche's Stanley Cup run – and eventual victory - back in 2001. Are we witnessing hockey greatness in Denver once again? We'll see... Regardless, we're so glad to have a few of our favorite boys back in town!

Denver's New Squeeze

MTV and the rest of America have been fawning over Denver heartthrob, James Roy, since the recent premiere of his music video, "Rise Above," on MTV's Logo. His new album, Begin, boasts a vibrant beat. Not only does this stud radiant charisma, but his lyrics touch a deeper side revealing feelings about discrimination and self-realization.

Roy has Blue Disco Records and the entire music industry pumped about his future. He's just another example of what's happening on Denver's talented music scene.

If you haven't already heard "Rise Above" on the radio or on a dance floor, check out www.jamesroy.com, or purchase his album on www.itunes.com.

Tucked inside Denver's JW Marriot is a new restaurant deserving of its endearing name, Second Home. Quaint, but elegant, simple but classy, award-winning architect, Andrew Kikosk, has erected a cozy and approachable lounge, while still remaining sleek and chic in his design. Chef Che Frey's delectable menu includes breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or a nightcap. The expansive selection ranges from rotisserie meals, seafood and creative nightly specials - and a wine list is fit for any bill (literally). Don't miss the "Lemon Ice-Box Cake" topped with a towering meringue.

American Beauty

During her freshman year of college, Colorado native Ange Trahern suffered a horrific car accident, one that not only scarred her emotionally, but physically, too. She endured numerous, painful facial surgeries, but with all of the expensive lotions and potions available on the market - and dermatologist recommendations - Trahern was still unable to find a product that would help.

Convinced there was a solution, she began researching ingredients to stimulate skin cell renewal, thus her innovative miracle for facial skin was born.

The line, Bieux Skin, was launched at Sophora nationwide on March 3rd.

Prize Patrol

We're giving a few lucky Avalanche fans - and aspiring chefs, perhaps - autographed copies of the 2008 Avs Better Halves Cookbook, which were given to guests who attended the Colorado Avalanche Annual Charity Brunch on Sunday, March 2. One cookbook is autographed by Jordan Leopold and the other is autographed by Adam Foote.

If you saw this year's "What's Cookin'," hosted by Kyle Keefe, on Altitude Sports and Entertainment, you saw the Avalanche players and coaches in Panzano's kitchen preparing some of their favorite meals. those meals were turned into recipes for you and me. If you don't win a copy of the cookbook, you can purchase one through the Avs Better Halves organization. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will be donated to non-profits in the Denver community that provide programs and services for families and children.

Right now you can only purchase the cookbooks during Avalanche games, but they will soon be available in the Altitude Authentics store. For more information, contact Christina Rough: 303.405.1166.

Previous Prize Patrol winner of the $50 gift certificate from A New Spirit Spa said, "I'm so excited, I think it's wonderful that Denver Magazine® gives gifts! It's different than any other magazine. Thank you!" – Dana Dracon
